Ranikallu

Ranikallu (literally meaning "Queen's Stone") is a historical stone monument and memorial located in Neriamangalam, Kerala, sitting on the geographical border of the Ernakulam and Idukki districts. Erected by the Travancore royalty to commemorate the construction of the landmark Neriamangalam Bridge, this site is historically revered as the "Gateway to the High Ranges" on the route to Munnar.

Historical Background

  • Royal Origin: The monument was established under the aegis of the Kingdom of Travancore.

  • The Neriamangalam Bridge (1935): The stone marks the official commencement of the construction of the Neriamangalam Bridge, completed in 1935. The engineering feat of carving this bridge and its adjacent roadway through dense, unforgiving forests connected Aluva directly to Munnar, officially opening up the high ranges for commercial and public transport.

  • Present-Day Landmark: The historic site remains perfectly preserved right alongside National Highway 85 (the Kochi-Dhanushkodi road).

Location & Travel Information

  • Precise Location: The stone pillar is situated on the banks of the Periyar River, immediately adjacent to the Neriamangalam Bridge.

  • Proximity: It is located approximately 18 km away from Kothamangalam, the nearest major transit town.

  • Transit Significance: As the definitive gateway to the hills, commuters and tourists traveling from Ernakulam or Kochi toward the Munnar hill station pass directly by this monument.
